CIMO – Mountain Research Center is a multidisciplinary research unit focused on Mediterranean mountain issues, based at UPB and with a pole at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo. CIMO is part of the national research network coordinated by FCT.
The Center follows an interdisciplinary approach based on an applied research strategy that covers issues and knowledge ranging from nature (raw materials, natural resources, biodiversity, agriculture and forest management) to products (food or bio-based materials).
CIMO aims to promote research in Mediterranean mountain areas, in line with international best practices, boosting scientific observation and experimental development for the conservation, exploitation and scientific valorization of biodiversity, natural resources, agricultural and forestry systems and mountain products. It also aims to develop sustainable land use systems, improving endogenous research skills, and linking research and stakeholders that foster sustainable development in mountain areas.
The Center currently has 77 integrated doctorate members, specialists in various areas of the natural, social and engineering sciences who focus their research on promoting sustainable development through the use of endogenous resources and the creation of value chains. This diversity of experience and knowledge allows it to be fully multidisciplinary, given the subject of its main activity: complex physical-biological-human mountain systems.
