Recognition of Foreign Higher Education Degrees and Diplomas
The recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions has been regulated since 2019.
In Portugal there are three types of recognition – Automatic, Level and Specific – with the same legal value, but serving different purposes.
Whatever type of recognition is desired, it must always be requested by the holder of the diploma (or legal representative) by filling in the form provided by the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES).
Recognition of Portuguese Degrees and Diplomas
DGES is responsible for issuing declarations on the recognition of Portuguese higher education institutions and their degree courses.
This type of recognition can be requested by entities in any country in order to validate and recognize a qualification certificate, diploma or certificate of academic records.
The declaration in question can also be requested online by filling in the form available on the DGES website.
