Textiles (and of course textile waste) are an integral part of human life and are present in various sectors of society. According to the Portuguese Environment Agency (PEA), textiles represent the fourth greatest impact on the environment and climate change, which is why it is essential to adopt a circular approach to their use. In 2025, the selective collection of textiles will even be mandatory as a measure to reduce the environmental impact of the textile industry, making it possible to apply the principles of the circular economy. With this in mind, and with the Bragança Polytechnic University (UPB) already taking a proactive stance in raising awareness of the region’s environmental and social problems, standing out since 2020 with the creation of a solidarity textile bank; this project aims to integrate and articulate with Resíduos do Nordeste, E.I.M, SA the recovery of textile waste in this bank. Over the years, the UPB has received, sorted and separated textiles in various states of condition, with particular attention being paid to textiles considered unusable (torn, stained, among others), in an attempt to find the best solution for the textile waste in collaboration with Resíduos do Nordeste. The aim is also to provide entrepreneurship education by training people to set up businesses with unusable textiles, making a holistic contribution to creating a positive impact in the region.

Mental and Psychological Health problems represent a considerable (and growing) proportion of the global burden of disease, and are one of the main challenges for Public Health now and in the future, given their prevalence and impacts (premature mortality, higher levels of suicide, percentage of years of disability, personal and family suffering, immeasurable economic and social cost). The president of the Portuguese Psychologists’ Association explains that it is usually in higher education that the first signs of mental health problems appear. “Integration into higher education, new networks of relationships, the eventual transition to the job market are some of the challenges that university students have to face”, underlining that it is crucial to work from a preventive point of view “with integration measures in the first few months of entering higher education and with projects that promote mental health”. Increasing mental health literacy (MHL) using a digital guide, available on the UPB health office platform, can be an effective strategy for promoting mental health, preventing mental illness and managing symptoms. BITs (Behavioral Intervention Technologies) provide promising avenues for creating new streams for prevention resources for mental health problems. New technologies support better decision-making and emotional regulation.
GreenTech
This project proposes an innovative approach to the repair of electronic equipment and personalized training at the institute as part of the teaching methodology and as a startup company, an approach that combines education, sustainability and entrepreneurship. This project will promote decent work, effective service and practical training, in line with the principles of Agenda 2030, the STARS EU Alliance and also the UPB Strategic Plan. With the strategic plan to co-create a sustainable future in mind and the Bragança Polytechnic University being a higher education institution with more than 10,500 students, with a diverse range of cultures, knowledge and nationalities, it is pertinent that there is a workshop that can respond to any problems that arise on a day-to-day basis, in the context of problems with electronic equipment. As a practical laboratory for students, as they will be the workforce carrying out the necessary actions, the aim is also to offer personalized training for students/community members who have difficulties carrying out certain ICT tasks or acquiring soft skills, thus promoting an innovative practical environment with multidisciplinary and multicultural learning.
The collaborative laboratory environment can be a pedagogical innovation that will immerse students in real environments, making learning broader and improving students’ transversal skills.
