Special Call for International Students_1

The Special Call for International Students applies to all those who enjoy International Student Status.

This call for applications is held annually and it is up to each HEI to prepare and develop the procedures for access and admission to its courses/cycles of study, under the terms set by the legislation, establishing, in particular, the deadlines, vacancies and the criteria for selection and tie-breaking.

Every year, UPB publishes and disseminates the notice for the opening of the procedures related to the special call for international students in accordance with the Regulations for the Application of UPB’s International Student Status (available in the Academic Regulations menu).

Applications can be submitted individually or through institutions that have a protocol with the UPB for this purpose.

Individual applications must be made online through the UPB application portal.

International students

All students who do not have Portuguese nationality are eligible for International Student Status, with the exception of:
    • nationals of a member state of the European Union (they can apply to the National Competition for Access to Higher Education as students with foreign qualifications);
    • family members of Portuguese nationals or nationals of a member state of the European Union, regardless of their nationality;
    • of those who are not citizens of a Member State of the European Union but who have been legally resident in Portugal for more than two years, uninterruptedly , on January 1st of the year in which they intend to enter higher education, as well as their children who reside with them, the length of residence for study not being relevant for this purpose (these students will be eligible for the National Access Competition for students with foreign qualifications);
    • those applying to enter higher education through the special regime.

What are the maximum number of ECTS credits I can enroll for when enrolled full-time and part-time?

For full-time students: 60 + 18 ECTS credits. When enrolled in higher education for the second time (or more), the student may enroll in curricular units from the current or previous curricular year, for a total of 60 ECTS, and in more curricular units up to a maximum of 18 ECTS per year, from the syllabus of the same course/study cycle or from other UPB courses/study cycles. It will be up to the competent bodies of each School to regulate the number of these credits a student can register for each semester. For part-time students: 30 ECTS credits. Part-time students can enroll, in each academic year, in a number of curricular units, subject to the rules of precedence in force at each School, which total a maximum of 30 ECTS. However, if the part-time student is a finalist in a Bachelor’s study cycle and the number of ECTS credits missing for completion is no more than 30, they can enroll in curricular units of Master’s study cycles, up to the limit established for students with full-time student status, without increasing their tuition fee.

When do I choose tuition regime (full or partial)?

At the time of enrollment or registration, at the beginning of each academic year, regardless of the access regime. The student’s request for part-time status is valid for one academic year. Students can request a change from full-time to part-time student status at the time of enrollment or registration for each academic year, and vice versa.
