How do I choose my system of attendance and tuition fees (full-time or part-time)?

The full-time regime is intended for all students with no other occupation than their higher education course, so that the time needed to complete the course or cycle of studies in which they are enrolled does not exceed its normal duration.

The part-time regime should only be chosen when the student has another activity that prevents them from dedicating themselves exclusively to their course, such as being a student-worker whose professional activity does not allow them to dedicate themselves to full-time study or equivalent.

However, if the student is only missing up to 30 ECTS credits from the course or cycle of studies in which they are enrolled, they should opt for the part-time regime, with advantages in terms of tuition fees. This is a possibility offered by the UPB that is not generally offered by other higher education institutions.

In addition, the UPB also offers a special tuition fee regime for students who are graduating from a Bachelor’s study cycle and have a maximum of 30 ECTS credits left to complete. In this case, in addition to the part-time tuition regime, the student will be able to enroll in curricular units of Master’s study cycles, up to the limit established for students with full-time student status (60+18 ECTS credits), without increasing their tuition fee.

I'm enrolled in a Master's degree and I just need to complete my dissertation. Is my tuition fee the same as all other full-time Master's students?

Yes, with the exception of cases where simultaneously:
    • It is at least the second enrollment in this curricular unit;
    • You only need to pass this subject to complete the course.

I'm enrolled in an UPB course or cycle of studies. Can I enroll in single-standing course units from other courses and study cycles?

Yes. However, enrollment in single-standing course units by a full-time or part-time UPB student is subject to the corresponding ECTS credit limits and rules stipulated, respectively, in articles 11 and 14 of the General Enrollment and Registration Regulations and described in the answer to FAQ no. 1.

I'm not enrolled in any UPB course or study cycle or I've never even attended higher education. Can I enroll in single-standing course units in UPB's courses and study cycles?

Yes. UPB offers the possibility of enrolling in curricular units of its higher professional technical courses, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees to all interested parties, regardless of whether or not they are enrolled in a higher education course. Enrollment in single-standing course units by anyone not enrolled in an UPB course or cycle of studies is subject to a limit of 30 ECTS credits per semester. Enrollment can be subject to assessment or not. Curricular units in which the student registers for assessment and passes: a) They are subject to certification; b) They are accredited if the holder has or will acquire the status of student on a higher education course or cycle of studies; c) They are included in the supplement to the diploma that will be issued. Applications for enrollment in single-standing course units by any interested person not enrolled in an UPB course or cycle of studies are made online, on the UPB application portal, at the beginning of each academic year or semester. The possibility of enrollment will then be assessed by the school teaching the course.

Tuition fees Under the terms of the basic law on the financing of higher education, students must contribute to the costs of their training by paying the institutions where they are enrolled an attendance fee, known as a tuition fee. Tuition fees are indexed to enrollment/registration, and not to attendance at a course/cycle of studies. This means that a student who is regularly enrolled (whether in single-standing course units, in a non-degree course, or in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate programme) who stops attending classes/teaching activities does not cease to be under obligation to pay the respective tuition fee. UPB’s tuition fees are among the lowest in the entire higher education system in Portugal. The UPB allows tuition fees to be paid in ten monthly instalments and also provides mechanisms for settling debts resulting from non-payment. Additionally:
    • The UPB offers all its final-year undergraduate students, who have up to 30 ECTS credits left to complete, the opportunity to continue their studies at Master’s degree level under favourable conditions in terms of tuition fees;
    • Master’s degree students enrolled for the second time in the dissertation/project work/internship curricular unit and who only need to pass this curricular unit in order to complete the study cycle will have favourable tuition fee conditions.
