Ciencia aberta_data repository

The aim of the data repository is to store, preserve and make available, in open access (as open as possible, as closed as necessary), research data generated by the academic community, according to the FAIR principle (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable).

The data repository facilitates the storage, management, preservation and use of research data prepared or gathered by UPB researchers or in collaborative research projects with other national or international institutions. The deposit of research data in the UPB’s data repository guarantees the management of good curation practices, long-term preservation and greater scientific dissemination.

The UPB data repository is accessible at dados.ipb.pt

Ciência Aberta_publications repository

UPB has a policy of mandatory deposit of all scientific publications produced by teachers, researchers and collaborators in the UPB Digital Library.

UPB’s publications repository was created in 2006 and aims to disseminate and allow free access to the scientific production carried out by the academic community, promoting the integration, sharing and visibility of scientific information, guaranteeing the preservation of UPB’s intellectual and scientific memory.

The UPB publications repository is accessible at bibliotecadigital.ipb.pt

Ciência Aberta_Ciência Aberta Policy

The Open Access policy of the Bragança Polytechnic University aims to disseminate and allow free access to the scientific production produced by the academic community, promoting the integration, sharing and visibility of scientific information, guaranteeing the preservation of intellectual and scientific memory.

Disseminating research results efficiently and widely is a significant part of UPB’s role as a reference applied research organization.

PortAberta

The PortAberta operation – Research Portal for Ciência Aberta – is promoted by the University of Minho (UMinho) and the Bragança Polytechnic University (UPB).

The two Higher Education and Research Institutions share the need to establish a CRIS (Current Research Information Systems) and Research Portal, as a tool to support and strengthen their affirmation in research and development and their commitment to Ciência Aberta.

The PortAberta operation is the result of the similar paths that the University of Minho and the Bragança Polytechnic University have taken in the field of open access and open science, both being recognized institutions in these fields, and both facing the need to establish their research portals in line with these paths and leveraging the systems and tools they already have.

This project is the result of an application submitted under the Support System for the Modernisation and Empowerment of Public Administration (SAMA2020) of the Agency for Administrative Modernisation (AMA). It is co-financed by the Competitiveness and Internationalisation Operational Programme (COMPETE 2020) of Portugal 2020 and by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.

Technology transfer_Intellectual Property

Intellectual property is the set of rights that covers the creations of human knowledge – intellectual creations – and is divided into two main areas: Copyright and Related Rights and Industrial Property. Copyright and related rights aim to protect literary and artistic works and cover rights of a patrimonial nature and rights of a personal nature, known as moral rights. The protection or registration of copyright guarantees the person who registers a literary or artistic work its ownership.  Industrial property is a set of rights that confer exclusive use in the market. Through Industrial Property it is possible to protect inventions by patent or utility model, obtain registrations for trademarks or other distinctive trade signs and also for designs or models, and thus protect investments in innovation while facilitating the economic return on those investments. The different types of Industrial Property are complementary and, for this reason, opting for one does not preclude the use of other types to protect different characteristics of a product. The most widely used type of industrial property is the patent. A patent protects new solutions to specific technical problems, i.e. products, devices, processes or uses of products or devices, giving the inventor/creator the exclusive right to produce and commercialise an invention in return for its public disclosure. A patent can be used to protect inventions in any technological area and to protect biological material, chemical and pharmaceutical substances or compositions and their processes or food products and their processes. UPB is increasingly involved in projects with external companies and organisations, based on co-research, co-innovation and the transfer of knowledge and technology. As a result of this vibrant synergy, intellectual and industrial property registration processes are regularly triggered, some of which are attracting strong commercial interest. UPB’s Project Office – Science and Technology Management provides support in industrial property registration processes, having already accompanied more than half a hundred patenting processes. Impact

The impact of UPB’s research activity is reflected in its capacity for technology transfer, its presence in highly competitive international rankings, its scientific output in the form of publications in leading journals with a high impact factor, the open access availability of publications and data, as well as its dissemination and outreach activities to society and the community in general. Attracting competitive funding at national and international level is also a distinctive factor in the impact of UPB’s research activity.

Ethics Committee

The Ethics Committee aims to ensure the observance and promotion of standards of integrity, honesty and technical quality in the activity of the Organic Units and Research Units and Centers, in order to protect and guarantee the dignity and integrity of the human person at the various stages of their constitution and development.

The Ethics Committee is a multidisciplinary team made up of eleven members: a President, a Vice-President and nine other members.

The Ethics Committee is responsible for analyzing ethical issues within the scope of the actions, responsibilities and internal and external relations of the units that make up the UPB, as well as the conduct of its members, specifically when they concern teaching, research, extension activities or other academic activities that may be of general interest to the UPB. The Ethics Committee is also responsible for issuing opinions on the ethical aspects of research work, in particular those involving people, animals or biological material in any form.

One of the committee’s goals is to promote reflection and the dissemination of aspects related to ethics in the context of scientific research activities, by the means considered most appropriate, namely studies and/or scientific activities.
